Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich have ended their engagement amid all kinds of weird sh*t being dusted off online, and it's honestly...just...a mess. Mostly because Max decided to air out their dirty laundry on Instagram Stories while Demi remains cool for the summer fall.
At this point, multiple confused friends (and my mom—hi mom) have texted me after developing a sudden, urgent interest in Demi and Max's breakup, and TBH I get it because it's a pretty confusing situation that deserves an in-depth breakdown. So let's get! to! it!
September 12: Max's Old Tweets Resurface
And they're best described as 😬. Basically, it looks like Max spent a lot of time thirsting after other celebs—including Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Ariana Grande—before he met Demi. On top of that, some fans are (perhaps incorrectly) convinced he has several Selena-themed tattoos:

Oof, but keep in mind that a lot of misinformation gets circulated on Twitter, which brings us to....
September 13: Demi's Statement
Demi released a lengthy statement on Instagram Stories, claiming that some of Max's alleged old tweets pitting her against Selena Gomez were entirely fake.

September 17: Demi's Friends Raise Concerns
According to an E! source, Demi was "really upset" when Max's old tweets surfaced, and "people close to [her] have expressed that they are worried and are hesitant about Max."
That said, the source also claimed that "She is head over heels for Max and doesn't want to be heartbroken. She truly cares about Max and wants to think his intentions are genuine."
September 24: The Breakup
Honestly, this day was a roller-coaster. First, a Page Six source confirmed that a breakup was imminent, saying, "It’s not over yet, but it’s on its way there."
Then, just mere hours later, both People and E! News claimed the two had called things off, with a source telling People that "It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers. They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together."
Neither Demi nor Max confirmed the reports, but Demi posted a mirror selfie without her engagement ring:

September 25: The *Real* Reason They Broke Up
Despite that People source trying to play off their breakup as drama-free, an Us Weekly source made it clear that Max's "self-promotion" was an issue:
“In the beginning, Max was super careful about self-promotion [and] things with his career, but once they got engaged, he really hit the gas pedal and wanted to make the most out of his career opportunities. He felt more comfortable doing so after they were fiancés and had a little bit more of a leg up.”
Ugh. Meanwhile, an E! News source went even more in, saying Demi and Max were "arguing a lot" before he traveled to Atlanta to film a new project—and that Demi "didn't know who Max truly was and didn't think he had good intentions."
"There were many red flags she was ignoring and trying to turn a blind eye to," one source said, while another mused that "she doesn't trust him and thinks he's sketchy" and "feels [Max] proposed to get attention."
Yikes yikes yikes.
September 26: Demi Deletes All Her Pics of Max
Oh, and she unfollowed him:
Meanwhile, Max hopped on Instagram Stories and claimed that he'd learned about their breakup through the tabloids.

September 27: Max Goes OFF on Instagram
Truly !!!!! at all of this, but Max hopped back on Insta Stories after his initial tabloid claims, saying "Please stop trying to 'Thank you, next' me. For I'm just a human being who has to go to work tomorrow AM where there are families with kids relying on me.... To this moment... we haven't spoken over the phone... we haven't even officially ended anything to each other, literally. I'm here in real time with y'all. I love Demetria and just want her to be healthy and safe."
Instagram
He also shared a bunch of posts featuring her songs and wrote "Demetria is THEE best female vocalist alive. And everyone should know it. She inspires me every day and is an INCREDIBLE human being. I know it's not her writing these stories, it's a machine. I love her unconditionally."
Instagram
It goes without saying that Demi's fans were not thrilled:
On top of this, sources told E! News that Max was "lying," that in fact, "Demi did tell him [about the breakup] beforehand," and that Max was "just trying to stay relevant. Her family thinks he is crazy and is so relieved she has taken this step."
Meanwhile, Max doubled down on his claims about the tabloids:

September 28: Demi Is "Completely Embarrassed"
While Demi still hasn't spoken out about Max's Insta musings, a source told E! News that she "wants no contact with Max at this point. She is completely embarrassed at the way he's been acting and putting their relationship on blast via social media. She wants nothing to do with him."
The source also confirmed that Max has "tried to reach out" to Demi and is "in denial" that they're over. Meanwhile, his "erratic behavior" is "worrying" Demi, who is "completely done" and "does not want the situation to escalate."
September 29: Max Hits Instagram...Again
In a series of posts, Max claimed people were trying to "Jeffrey Epstein" him—though it's unclear if these posts were related to his breakup.
That's (thankfully) all for now—but we'll be updating this should things get even more complicated.
